Final Blog :(

Good morning,

I enjoyed looking back on this past exercise.  I would say my physical well-being is still at a 9, although this week, being that I was ill, I put it at an 8.  However, since my health is improving, I will be back at the gym this week.  I will be keeping a journal of not only my exercises and the weight that I lift, but also the food I am eating.  I find that it is the only way that I can hold myself accountable for my actions when it comes to the physical aspect.

My spiritual level has dropped down to a 6 from the 7 that I originally rated it.  I would have liked to do more meditation and Reiki; however, I never made the time.  Life got very busy and a bit stressful with the sale of my company and me being out of town for my other job that I just didn’t find the time.  I actually have this week off from work, so I will be practicing my Reiki on my children and pets.  I think if I can re-activate it that would put me in a better spiritual standing.  It will not only help them, but it will help me as well.

My psychological well-being is at an 8 from a 7.  With this additional stress that I have been feeling, I have been using my deep breathing techniques and mind-clearing (witnessing) techniques.  I would say that I have definitely improved on my mental well-being.  I will continue to use these methods to help myself with anxiety and stress.

I have enjoyed learning about these techniques in class.  I have also found that this class reminded me of the importance of the different practices and how important it is to improve my overall health.  My eyes have been opened to the concept of integral health and I hope that other people, companies and healthcare organizations will see the importance as well.

Through this particular education, I am able to, not only understand myself better, but understand people a little bit better.  I understand that if they have a reaction about one particular thing, it is usually fueled by other issues.  I feel that it has helped me grow as an individual and will also help me to assist others in their growth.  I will be taking away more practical knowledge from this course than I have with any of the other ones that I have taken.
I wish everyone the best in their future endeavors.  Good luck!

Final Project

I.     Introduction:

Professionals that practice integral health treat the person in a physical, spiritual and psychological level.  Treating the whole person is important in order to treat the symptoms along with the root of the ailment.  Diving in to the whole person, as opposed to just the problem, could, not only help them heal the problem, but prevent it from reoccurring.

With integral health, the psychological and spiritual aspects of a person are treated and strengthened.  When the mind is clear and a person has a positive focus, their body, in turn will strengthen.  Clearing the mind of stress and anxiousness, the body will follow.  The organs will work more efficiently and various ailments may treat themselves.

My plan would be to include various holistic practices within my lifestyle such as meditation, massage therapy, visualization and diaphragmatic breathing.  These modalities would help me clear my mind and allow my mind and body to function properly.  This would not only help with my psychological development, but also with my spiritual development.  It would rid my mind of a lot of tense and anxious thoughts that I tend to have.

I find the older that I get, the more I struggle between allowing little things bother me and having the knowledge that I need to think clearly.  I believe if I can include meditation and diaphragmatic breathing into my life on a regular basis, I would live a calmer life.  Visualization will help me to keep myself focused on things that I want and need to have in my life.  Massage therapy would be another great way of relaxing in order to have a clear mind and body.

II.   Assessment:

I have chosen to assess my health within the three sections on a scale of 1through 5.  1 would be the lowest and shows that little to no improvement has happened and 5 would show the most improvement.  I feel that the top rating should never show perfection.  The reason is that there is always room for improvement and I know, for me, I always strive for that.  I also feel that since we are always constantly changing and evolving, there is always going to be improvement that is needed.

To reflect my growth and development in the spiritual realm, I give myself a 2.  I do not meditate as much as I would like to or say that I am going to.  I feel if I just meditated a bit more, I would be a little bit more grounded in my spirituality.  I am not a religious person by any means, but I do believe in a higher power and the power that resides within us and I would like to develop that.

To reflect my physical growth, I do give myself a 4.  I know what fitness level I am at and exactly where I would like to be.  I have a complete plan to get there and I have been staying on track with it.  The only point of change that I need to make is that I need to be a lot stricter with my diet.  Now I completely understand too, that have a strict, healthy diet does become more difficult during the holidays, but I will do my best to try.  As far as physical exercise, my plan consists of cardio-respiratory exercise in the morning and weight training in the evening.  I will work out at least 5 days a week.

As far as my psychological fitness goes, I give myself a 3.  Even though I have trained myself to become a calmer person, I still have my moments where my brain is filled with anxiety.  During those times, it is hard to talk myself into a calmer state.  I know that I still need work in that aspect in order to control my anxiety attacks.  I know it can be done; however, it will take time to accomplish that.

III.  Goal development:

The personal goals that I have for myself are as follows:

In respect to my physical goal, I would like to continue to hit the gym harder than ever and get in to competition mode.  I want to be at my prime when I compete next May.  This means that I need to lift heavier weight.  I also need to find a spotter to assist me with my squats as I am using the 45 lbs. bar plus extra weight.  Right now I am only up to 60 lbs. of extra weight on my squats, but I know I will increase it over time.

For my psychological goals, I still need to decrease my anxiety levels.  Instead of reacting, when I feel anxiety coming on, I need to do deep breathing and be able to take a step back.  I still find myself letting my mind tell itself stories that are not true.  I will work on having the deep breathing exercise is an automatic reaction to my anxiety.

Spiritual goal – I would like to get back in to performing Reiki.  I am a Certified Reiki Master; however, I did stop performing it for many years.  I will start practicing it on my family and then expand to performing it on my friends.  I will also go to a Reiki practitioner to receive it myself.  This will help with the cleansing and clearing of me, so I can practice it on others.

IV. Practices for personal health:

2 different examples of a method and how it is going to work for each section (6 all together) – Explain how they will be implemented in detail.  Should be the longest section.

What strategies can you implement to foster growth in each of the following domains; Physical, Psychological, and Spiritual. Provide at least two examples of exercises or practices in each domain. Explain how you will implement each example.

Personal health should always take a priority.  I feel that the older that I get, the more important my mental and physical health is.  I need to take charge of my life and be sure to start practicing what I have learned.  It’s never too late to start a new, positive habit.

For my physical health, the first thing I will concentrate on is exercise.  I will lean out with doing a cardio-respiratory exercise in the morning such as running, walking or doing the elliptical and then weight training in the evening.  I will lift weights and continue to lift heavier so I can reach my goal of a fitness competition in 2015.  This practice will happen 5 times a week.

My second step to a better physical health will be diet.  I already eat healthy, but I can do better.  I will start tracking the foods that I eat in a journal.  I will not “cheat” on this journaling, as some people do, because it will only hurt me.  I will review my journal at the end of each week to see how well I ate or to see what changes I need to make.

My steps to a better mental fitness include diaphragmatic breathing.  Performing deep breathing when I start to become stressed will play a key factor in calming me down instantly.  The moment I start to have anxious thoughts, I will practice some deep breathing.  I will take a moment to clear my mind while I am inhaling and exhaling.  I will also practice visualization to change the “story” that is in my mind into a positive one.

My second step to a better mental fitness is the getting a massage.  I truly feel that not only does massage help the body, but it helps the mind as well.  I have heard that 1 hour of massage equals 8 hours of sleep and I truly believe that.  Getting a massage once a month will help me be more relaxed and allow me to think clearer.

Last, but not least, is my development of my realm of spirituality.  For spirituality, I will go to a Reiki practitioner and receive Reiki.  Reiki will help clear my power centers (Chakras) inside my body and will also clear my mind.  Reiki has the power to remove stress and anxiety as well and I think that will help me get close to my higher power.

The second exercise I will do to strengthen my spirituality is visualization.  I believe what you think about, you bring about.  I think visualization is key in life.  I have started my vision board to help me determine and focus on things that I want out of life such as a stronger family unit and better physical health.  Not only is a vision board helpful with visualization, but taking a moment out of the day to mentally visualize is important as well.  I will start to take a moment in my morning to visualize what I want to happen during the course of my day.  I will perform this every morning to help me focus on positive outcomes.

V.  Commitment:

I will keep a journal of the healing modalities that I utilize and how many times a week I partake in them. I will also need to make my journal entry very detailed so it is easy for me to rate each step in my healing process.  It is important to know the emotional and psychological outcome from each modality.  This will help with deciding which modality I need the most in the future.   I will be sure to write down how often I have feelings of anxiety and what thoughts are causing them.  It will be very helpful to see the comparison of how often I am having anxious thoughts versus how often I am taking part in a healing therapy.

I will continue journaling for a full twelve months so I can continue to compare the activities and emotions in my life.  After a year of working through the various stages and finding therapies that I am most comfortable with, I will have then formed a habit.  This habit will be a very beneficial habit of bettering the quality of my life, which in turn will better the quality of my family’s life as well.

I have already started keeping a journal of my fitness routine.  I keep a log in my workout bag as far as which workouts I have done on a particular day along with the amount of weight that I lifted.  This helps me track my progress as to reaching my fitness goals.

I need to keep a journal on my mental fitness as well.  I will track the frequency and the modality of mental healing that I use.  I will also track my thoughts and my moments of anxiety.  This will help me view my behavior and my mental activity.  Once I see a pattern, I can improve my mental fitness by performing one of the modalities that I have previously stated.

Unit 8 Blog

Hello everyone,

This week has been another difficult week with a bad flu virus running rampant throughout my household.  At least I have been spending more time with the kids, even though we have been doing nothing except trying to recover.

The healing modalities that I have found most helpful is meditation and visualization.  I have always been a huge proponent of visualization, but now I see and understand the full benefit of it.   I have even started a vision board that I need to get back to.   Meditation is another helpful tool.  I find that it really is beneficial in helping with relaxation.  I also use meditative breathing when I start to get stressed and anxious and it has made a world of difference.

I hope everyone else has benefitted from this class and I hope that we can continue on with these practices after the course is completed.

Hello my fellow cohorts,

The following are my responses to this week's blog questions.

1.    Complete the Meeting Aesclepius mp3 (located in the Doc Sharing area). Describe your meditative practices for the week and discuss the experience. Explain how mindfulness or meditation has fostered an increase in your psychological or spiritual wellness. How can you continue to apply these practices in your life to foster greater health and wellness?

Unfortunately, I did not have a lot of time or will to meditate this week.  I did, however, listen to the mp3 – Meeting Aesclepius.  Once again, it was a bit difficult to listen to the man’s voice because of his accent.  Once the meditation started it had a great message and this time, I was able to relax while listening to it.  Even though I did not get a chance to meditate this week, I have found it to be helpful.  It has made me more relaxed and focused.  I find that, for me, it is better to meditate at night to relieve my day’s stress.  If I can become relaxed and more focused, I will be able to help others achieve similar goals along with other goals they may have set their sights on.

2.    Describe the saying: "One cannot lead another where one has not gone himself" (p.477).  How does this apply to the health and wellness professional? Do you have an obligation to your clients to be developing your health psychologically, physically, and spiritually? Why or why not? How can you implement psychological and spiritual growth in your personal life?

The quote “One cannot lead another where one has not gone himself. (p. 477) is actually quite profound.   This is basically saying that you cannot teach people what you haven’t learned.  Just as you cannot help people to increase their mental, spiritual and physical health unless you have taken steps to improve your health in those three areas.  I truly believe that if you don’t practice what you preach, it does not make you credible.  You have to walk in those shoes before you teach people how to walk in them.  If you haven’t experienced it, you will not be able to have educated responses to issues that may arise.  Through this course and other courses that I have taken, I feel that I, not only have a better understanding of integral health and how I can use the information that I have obtained prior to helping others.

Hello Fellow Bloggers,

The Loving Kindness exercise was a meditation with a mantra.  Repeating the mantra over and over helps to instill it into the memory.  Performing this mantra allows this behavior to become second nature.  The Integral Assessment was a lifestyle/behavior check to see which areas of someone’s life needs improving or changing.

I have discovered that I would like to work on the aspects of my life that encompasses fitness goals, emotional development and just plain organization.  When it comes to fitness, I would like to lift heavier and at least get back to where I was earlier this year.  I know it won’t take me too much longer to achieve this goal, but I just have to stick to it.  Emotional development always needs to be improved.  Even though I have been working on my issues with anxiety, I need to become better at having a witnessing mind and not entertaining negative thoughts.  Meditation is an exercise that will definitely help with this.

Organization will come in time.  Once my company has been sold and I know whether or not I will still be employed, I can decide what I will be doing about the other jobs and projects that I am involved with.  For this type of organization, I will formulate a list of jobs and related tasks to actually make a visual analysis of what I want to have happen.  I am also going to use this information to create a vision board to help with organizing and hopefully, manifesting my ideas.  Once I have achieved these things, I feel I will be a much more relaxed and organized individual.

Unit 5 - Higher Thinking

Hello everyone!

1.   Compare and contrast the Loving Kindness exercise and the Subtle mind exercise. Explain your experience including the benefits, frustrations etc.

I liked both of the meditations; however, there were definite differences.  The Loving Kindness exercise was a good meditation even though I felt that the pauses were too long and some of the directions were difficult to accomplish.  It was hard to encompass people that I do not know into my thoughts.

The Subtle Mind exercise was actually really relaxing for me.  I did not like the man’s voice that was in the beginning of the audio, but I did like the woman’s voice.  Her voice was perfect to guide us through the meditative breathing.  I prefer this meditation over The Loving Kindness meditation.  With it focused on breathing, it seemed a lot more tangible for me than the other one.   I know I will be doing that meditation again.

2.    Discuss the connection of the spiritual wellness to mental and physical wellness. Explain how the connection is manifested in your personal life.

It seems as though that you cannot have spiritual wellness without having mental and physical wellness.  When your mind is clear and your body is working correctly, you have the capacity to allow for spiritual growth.  With your mind being free of negative mental chatter, it allows you to connect to your spiritual guide.  It also allows you to be able to put faith in to your spiritual guides as well as your intentions.

I have not completely reached this level of mental awareness.  I know I still need a little bit of work and time to accomplish this goal.  I need to fully get a grasp on mental clarity and a more positive thought process.  This will take some time to achieve.

Hello Fellow Bloggers,

I actually enjoyed this meditation more than I have the other ones.  It was relaxing and I was able to perform most of the directions.  It was very difficult for me to think about a group of people to help without putting faces to them.  I found the next segment even more difficult when it said to include my enemies.

I would recommend this to other people, especially if they had someone special in their life that needed special help.  I think it will help someone be able to help their loved one.  The person that I immediately thought of was my son who has ADHD and some anger issues.  I secretly hope he felt
my love as I was exhaling.

A mental workout is a very healthy thing to do.  When you go to the gym, you exercise your body, so it would make sense that performing a mental workout would be just as healthy.  Research has shown the benefits of empowering the mind.  When someone’s mental health is clear and stable, their body seems to follow suit.  Meditation has been a great way for me to have my mental workouts.  Even practicing deep breathing to push negative thoughts out of the brain is beneficial.  Anything that helps to clear the mind will help keep the body healthy.
